Halifax Commons Playground

A new, accessible, and inclusive play space at the heart of one of Canada's most iconic urban parks.

← All Projects

A design-build initiative to deliver a new, accessible, and inclusive play space within the iconic Halifax Commons.

Undertaken in 2025, the Halifax Commons Playground is a significant design-build project delivered by Glenn Group at the heart of Halifax's urban core. Its development was meticulously guided by established master plans and informed by the surrounding historical landscape, existing circulation patterns, and the Commons' vital role as a primary civic gathering space for the community.

The design places a strong emphasis on universal accessibility and inclusive play — seamlessly incorporating accessible trails and thoughtfully integrated play elements suitable for all ages and abilities. A revitalized landscape framework strengthens connections to the broader park system, enhancing the overall user experience.

Constructed through a collaborative design-build process with Scott O'Reilly of PlayPower, this approximately $1-million project represents a significant legacy for the project team — nearing completion, with an anticipated grand opening in spring 2026.

The Approach

Play for everyone, at the city's heart

01

Central Urban Play

A central hub for community interaction and recreation that respects the historical significance of the Halifax Commons.

02

Inclusive & Accessible

Universally accessible trails and a wide array of inclusive play elements for children of all physical and cognitive abilities.

03

Landscape Integration

Thoughtful landscaping enhances natural beauty and strengthens links between the playground and the broader park system.

04

Design-Build

A highly collaborative design-build delivery with PlayPower — integrated expertise, efficient delivery, and the highest standards.

The main play structure with green tree-canopy shade and slides

A landmark play space

At the centre of the design is a signature play structure — tree-canopy shade, climbing, and slides — set on a safe, poured surface that anchors the space as a destination within the Commons.

Every element was chosen to sit comfortably within the Commons' historic landscape while giving families a bold, joyful place to gather.

Accessible, sensory play panels integrated into the playground

Designed for every ability

Inclusive play means more than a ramp. Sensory panels, accessible routes, and ground-level activities let children of all abilities play side by side.

Accessible trails weave through the space so that reaching the play — and moving between activities — is effortless for every visitor.

A collaborative design-build

Delivered hand-in-hand with Scott O'Reilly of PlayPower, the design-build model brought design and construction expertise together from day one — keeping the project efficient, coordinated, and true to the highest standards.

The result is a roughly $1-million legacy project for the team, ready to welcome the community at its grand opening in spring 2026.
