We begin from a deliberate position: a person is only “disabled” by a space to the degree its design failed to anticipate them. When the built environment stops making unreasonable demands, participation becomes the default rather than the exception.
Universal design is not a ramp added at the end or a single accessible feature set apart from the rest. It is a way of thinking about equity, inclusion and access across physical, sensory, communicative, social, emotional and intellectual differences — and the full spectrum of neurodivergence — so that a wide range of people and caregivers can navigate, use and enjoy a place together. Honouring the traditional lands we work on
We respectfully acknowledge that our projects are built on the traditional and unceded territories of the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik peoples. That acknowledgement carries a responsibility we take seriously in every design.
Our approach is grounded in Etuaptmumk — “Two-Eyed Seeing,” as taught by Mi’kmaq Elder Albert Marshall of Eskasoni in Unama’ki — which harmonizes Indigenous and Western ways of knowing. Refined over 40 years of collaboration with First Nations communities, our process means walking the land with Elders, sitting in circles, and above all listening deeply to the knowledge shared with us, so that Mi’kmaw and L’nu stories are integral to a place rather than added onto it.

Guided by these principles and aligned with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and UNDRIP, our engagement extends from the design phase through construction — incorporating traditional teachings on land respect, prioritizing local and Mi’kmaw hiring and procurement, and building lasting, reciprocal relationships with the communities we serve.
